BUC page 2

I never knew BUC personally, but had met him many times through friends & always enjoyed his music. I especially loved his timing on playing the perfect music when the sun would just be coming up on Fire Island at the Pavillion. To me, whenever I thought of Fire Island & the music, BUC, Michael Fierman & Susan Morabito always come to mind. It’s definitely not going to be the same without him….but he will remembered always for the countless smiles & joy brought into many peoples lives with his music.

Buc's passing does not only mark the end of a wonderful life, but symbolically, the end of an era. I entered the "circuit" in the early 90's and quickly realized that no one could rock the house like BUC. His ear for new music, lush melodies, improvisation, and fearless risk taking was unrivaled. "Pretty music I like, sweet music I HATE!" he would often say. Right on. A night with Buc was, like his mixing, seamless. Goddamn I'm going to miss hanging with him in that DJ booth.

Buc always challenged my sense of being over controlling or having too many boundaries. He was boundary-free ... much to the annoyance of anyone who would have to share a Fire Island home with him. I almost lost my mind when a walk with him from Sail to Seaview took nearly two days. He taught me to slow down. Enjoy the sunset. Take a picture of that budding flower. Say hello to everyone. Soak it in. Take your time. Live.

My fondest memory of Buc... I moved from my home of 14 years (NYC) to LA in 1999. I hardly knew anyone. Buc came out to play during my first week here... I hadn't even unpacked yet. He showed me all around LA. The landmarks. All he wanted that weekend was for me to take him to the nearest Jack-In-The Box HAHA. We went to Disney Land. 100 rolls of film of Goofy. All the rides. Just a big kid...

I am going to miss him. The man. And the master at the tables who spun those scratchy records that skipped at least once every performance. Ahhhh to hear those sophisticated sounds skip again. :-(((((

BUC's unique style, ear for quality sounds and fun loving personality created an atmosphere that was unforgettable. He touched so many in such a powerful way that his legend will live on forever...

Having had the pleasure of countless hours of Buc's company, talents and charms on and off the dance space over the years watching the joy he brought to everyone he touched, I have no doubt that he's now riding high in Empyrean - the uppermost reaches of heaven, a realm of pure fire, light and sound...and smiling!

For all the extraordinary "crossovers", he will be remembered warmly by many souls.

At 21, I was first introduced to Buc in 1996 by my best friend. Since then, I have been an avid fan of his music, so different and creative, a sound I had never heard before. It was beautiful, he turned me onto a whole new genre of dance music. Everytime he would venture close to the DC or Philly area, I would be sure to attend whichever event he would spin, I even had the opportunity to spend an entire evening in Atlanta with him spinning for a group of close friends. I never met a more terrific man than he, and today I idolize him for his mixing, his energy, his kinda spirit. I will miss Buc more than I could ever say. It is truly sad to lose someone so talented, yet so down to earth. Buc, you're in my heart forever.

I think the first time I heard BUC was at the Pavillion in Fire Island. What I want to share with all who read this thread is about a particular moment that I remember most about BUC. I was perhaps in 1995 or 1996, BUC spun one Saturday night at ARENA (The club/theater was officially known as The Palladium where Queen Vasquez was holding court and the NY music scene hostage till sometime on Sunday Afternoons in the mid 90's till it was shut forever Labor Day '97 by Guliani cowing into NYU - which razed the holy ground and put up some ugly concrete dorm). It was perhaps about an hour or two into his set when all of a sudden one of his records had a single small skip. As tuned in as the NY gay men are, they let it mostly go by unfettered. About 2 minutes later, another skip-this time louder and longer with about 3 turns of the skip-blasted onto the floor. With lots of loud "OHHH and UUHHHH's" from the dance floor, BUC immediately pulled the song and with perhaps a 1-2 second silent pause, immediately put on what he had obviously been cueing up next. As everybody began to groove again, small chatter on the dance floor was spreading that if there was another one of those episodes, he would be renamed from BUC to SKIP. As luck would have it, the next record played and within 2-3 minutes there was a skip. Rather than stop it, BUC let it continue to play and it never had another skip. As the music was playing, I saw up in the DJ booth the light come on and BUC shaking his head and breaking in two one of the records that had skipped (I'm assuming the first more damaged one). I remember thinking how fierce (it was THE word in 95) and how powerful to recognize that while a skip is most forgivable, to a DJ playing a seasoned crowd at 7 or 8 AM on a Sunday morning, it could be disastrous. I never thought about that night again and now wish I had told him personally how great I thought he was in general and in specific on that morning in the Palladium, especially since both are now fond memories.

When I moved to New York in 1991 from Toronto I knew nothing about music or DJs. I started going to Fire Island in 1992 and was inspired by the music I heard from Susan, Michael and Buc.

Buc's musical style was new to me. It seemed to have a happy house and a jazz like sound with a killer groove. As I got to know Buc I found out what a great guy he was. Eventually I became a DJ and would love when Buc would hang out in the DJ booth with me and give me pointers.

With great respect I know we will all miss Buc.

"I had the great pleasure to meet Buc for the first time in 1992, up on Fire Island. And over the years, Buc became a true friend and one of the most sincere and dignified people I've known. I'll always cherish my memory of you, Buc, and always remember the glorious moments of music and fellowship you gave us all. God be with you, dear friend."
