BUC page 1

Buc! The all time innovator of the dance music scene! Always guaranteed to plaster a smile upon the face...almost as much fun to watch as to listen to. We've lost a living legend and he'll be sorely missed by the countless he touched with joy...but Buc will live on in the hearts and fond memories of so many! It's almost a comforting realization. I'm, sure he has the angels above rockin'on a groove as they've never known before.

We found out on NYE as well that BUC had passed on and we decided to go out and dance as that's what BUC would have wanted.

He had an incredible influence on me musically and I truly believe that hewas the most gifted of the "Circuit" DJs. Gil and I went to Red that night to hear Kostas/Sam Burns/Tom B - the music was incredible and BUC would have been right at home - it was all about "Celebrating Life." His passing is a great loss for us all.

Buc, you never knew that well, but I secretly, was one of your biggest fans. No need to know my name just know that you made my heart explode everytime i heard you and I' ll miss you and your positive energy that has led me this far.

....................One of your biggest fans

I am happy to say that every time I experienced Buc, I did take a moment to stare in utter amazement of the gift that I was experiencing first hand. I would like to think that Buc inspired a lot of people to do the same. His understanding of music and his beautiful interpretation shall never be forgotten. His spirit will live on in our undying love of his sound. Buc, you will be unmatched and never forgotten.

It saddens me that such a wonderful person, that has spun us all through some of my most memorable and wonderful evenings has been taken from us.

I'm sure he has gone on to a better place. With forever a song in his heart. For he has left many in mine!

....................Bob, Pittsburgh

I have always found Buc being such a nice and sweet guy, always happy towards friends, he will be missed. I specifically remember making a birthday party when he played the After Party and he always found Michaels and mine yellow stickers in the Pavillion a great addition to the Pavillion Dancing Community.y. He loved them all.

WE will miss him but his spirit will live on ....................Gilbert Aleman, New York City

I wanted to post a tribute to Buc and for the longest time I sat here trying to compose the most complete paragraph that would convey the amazing magical draw his music had for all that followed him on and off through the years. And I can sit here and write about the first time I heard him play a remix of a Supreme's song or how he would remix "Love is in the Air" and make the dance floor come alive, but words do not do his talentjustice. Music does. So all of you BUCheads get all those "Sanctuary" parties recordings, all those Pavilion recordings, all those Phoenix Rising recordings, all those "Morning Party" recordings and keep BUC's talent alive, through the music he loved to play.

Farewell dear friend,

....................Luis E Casillas, Washington, D.C.

My first memory of witnessing Buc's musical sound was at Roseland Ballroom in 1994 on a Friday evening during the Gay Games in New York City. For those of you who might have attended, you know how awesome that night was! Since then, I have had the pleasure of listening to him play at many different venues around the country. Buc, thanks for the countless hours of musical entertainment you've provided for us all. We'll miss your smile, and your musical prowess. ....................Dean Lopez, New York City

I would like to say something for your site about BUC. "I had BUC play for me quite a few times and always found him to be a complete gentleman. BUC was always concerned with the quality of his performance and pleasing everyone. I have followed his career since I can remember and his reputation is a clear reflection of who he was as a person. Kind with others, concerned that people made it home OK and that they had a great time, was his attitude in the DJ booth. I feel honored to have worked with him and hope that the open arms of God are there for him as his arms were for others. Our community will truly miss a master behind the turntables, with a heart the size of Tracks dance Floor."

"The Day The Music Died"

BUC (North Star),

Your love filled my life, my heart, my soul...your hand over my heart. I always knew you were a gift on loan from above. You will forever be our North Star watching over and guiding us from above and you will be with us always ( "Body & Soul"). Thanks for mixing all the emotions that were our lives. Heaven's dance floor is all yours!

Deeply & Forever,

....................Mike "STAG" Stagner, Chicago

I brought him to Cleveland for my 50th Birthday Celebration as a benefit for DIFFA. I also helped bring him back to Cleveland for our Erie Party in July of 2001. We got to have a nice talk then, as I brought him from the airport to his hotel. I had put an old tape he had made for my birthday, but did not tell him, just let it play in the background. Adter some time I asked him what he thought of the tape? He said that he really liked and was about to ask me who had made the tape. He was a little embarrassed, but delighted, when I told him it was him. We had a good chuckle over that. I will really miss him. What a pleasure to have had the chance to fan with his music for over 10 years.

He was a wonderful spirit and a gentle soul. I will miss his passion for music....

BUC was The Master of Mixing. His unique style of blending sounds and lyrics often took us to a different place. A place where dreaming on the dance floor was common. Buc was instrumental in getting Phoenix Rising established as "the party" to attend. He brought a new level of excellence to the party every time he played. He may be gone but he will never be forgotten.

God Bless Buc.

I was proud to have known him and will cherish each moment along with my many CD's of his music.

It Was Heaven In Your Hands

Buc was the consummate after hours DJ. His music always had a certain intimacy to it, and a great deal of character. His sense of style was truly unique. Unlike most DJs, you could always tell when Buc was playing, not only in terms of his eclectic and adventuresome selections - he could keep a crowd deliciously off-center for hours - but also in terms of his mixing. During live performances, he would take the kind of risks with mixing that no one else would, except maybe Vasquez. He would line up three copies of the same record on three turntables, and work the shit out of them for 20 minutes. Occasionally it didn't work, but it usually did, and then it was electric. In 1996, at the height of the Sunscreem craze, he would play "When" simultaneously in three different languages, just to keep you off balance. As DJs go, he was quite versatile, equally at home at 90 beats per minutes as he was at 130, and everything in between. He played many large rooms but always seemed more at home within the familiar walls smaller, loungy spaces where his brand of intimate eclecticism could take root.

Buc was influenced a great deal by other DJs (esp. Frankie Knuckles, but also the Body & Soul DJs), which I really admired. Unlike other DJs who try to reinvent themselves semi-annually, Buc's ear was always open to new sounds, but he never compromised his own sensibility. He never much bought into heavy house or much of the numbing trance music that dominated the dance scene for so many years. Instead he preferred jazz-influenced dance music; music with soulful vocals and unusual instrumental solos. I think his greatest achievement was reinventing his own sound over the past several years, adapting the Body & Soul sound - dance music with a certain humanity to it - and making it his own sound. Exposure to new creative ideas is the life blood of any artist, and in this respect Buc was unusual among DJs - he wasn't so wrapped up in his own sound that he couldn't evolve as an artist. He exchanged new records eagerly with other DJs.

There was one night a year that was Buc's alone. I can't recall another occasion where a particular event became so closely associated with a DJ. It was the night at the Pavilion after the GMHC Morning Party. He played that evening for five or six years consecutively, maybe more, and it became his signature party of the year. An artist in his element, enveloped by a crowd who was passionate for his work. The currency of love between the artist and the dance floor was palpable. These were the nights I will remember the most. And that killer smile.

Buc, as you made such a big point of playing, it was "heaven nin your hands," indeed. I hope that all that joy comes back to you a thousand times.

Love and peace,

...................Alan Brown, New Haven

Roseland Ballroom. 1994. I'll never forget. It was the first time I'd ever heard Buc play, and he was on fire. Yet he still had the time, the patience and the enthusiasm to deal with pesky inquiries, time after time, track after track, from this awe-struck little punter. "Oh my God, what's THIS track?" He was a total gentleman, with a wicked sense of fun complemented by a tangible love for both his music and his audience. He was a big influence on me, and I'll miss him.

Buc's legacy to us all will be the many memories from past events, his friendship to all who knew him personally, and most far reaching his music. As Buc in his own words said, "I hope these songs move you in some way, be it your snapping fingers, your soul & hopefully your dancing feet, and makes you feel as good as it does me. The rhythms, the words, the melodies...hear them."

....................Excerpt from obituary

Buc collected Christmas ornaments with the absolute fervor that most DJ's reserve for vinyl. As we were beginning the bittersweet task of going through his belongings, we found a glass ornament shaped like a music note. I took it home to add to my memories. After the sad drive home, I pulled it out only to find that it had boken neatly in two. I gued it back together, sort of realizing that it was an approapriate symbol of the emotion I have heard expressed by so many in these last weeks.

You gave me so much joy on the dance floor-- and so recently that your leaving doesn't seem real. Glad I had you and some friends over, not so long ago, so that I could share a little bit of me with you. Caught ya in the kitchen playing with my toys, didn't I? It was nice to see you relaxing and laughing with your friends. Whether smiling down at me from the dj booth (that party at Zei Club was amazing! Where DID you find that music!? ) or just hanging out at that "hut on Fire Island," you'll be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

The evening of New Years Eve was an emotional one.Trying to hold back the tears, not to bring anyone down, I realized that I lost a friend and secondly one of my favorite DJ's. I can not even pick one of his greatest nights because to me they are all fabulous. It's the little things I will miss the most. The hints in his music, him playing with his camera, watching his face light up when you walked through the door of a party and just the love and energy that he gave off without saying a word. When I "Fan", he will know that I am fanning one or two for him. He would always ask, did you bring your fans? Always for you! Buc, thank you for touching my heart---Love, Life and Happiness.

FAREWELL TO AN EXTRODIANARY MAN ABOVE THE DANCE FLOOR CREATING A MAGICAL ATMOSPHERE WITH HIS MUSIC, WAS A MAN WE CAME TO KNOW AS BUC. TO BE IN HIS COMPANY, OR DANCING TO HIS MUSIC, YOU WERE MOST CERTAINLY IN LUCK. HIS MUSIC CAPTIVATED, AND INSPIRED US ALL, PACKED EACH PERFORMANCE, FROM EVERY CORNER, WALL TO WALL.

HIS SMILE WAS ELECTRIFYING, AND MOST CERTAINLY PURE THE MOST SWEETEST MAN THAT I HAVE KNOWN, THAT IS FOR SURE HIS FRIENDSHIP, AS HIS MUSIC, CAME FROM HIS HEART HE WANTED TO JOIN US ALL, TO BE A PART.

THE MAGIC HE CREATED ON THE DANCE FLOOR, ALWAYS MADE THE AUDIENCE PLEADING FOR MORE. HE PLAYED FROM A COLLECTION OF RECORDS, WITH A VERY UNIQUE AND CREATIVE MANNER. IT WAS DEFINITELY A PARTY FOR EVERYBODY THERE, FROM DANCERS TO EVERY SINGLE FANNER.

I HAVE KNOWN BUC, FOR MANY YEARS. I MISS HIM AS HIS OTHER FRIENDS AND ALL HIS PEERS. HIS UNIQUE SKILL OF ARTISTRY ENABLED HIM TO PLAY MUSIC, FROM THE ATLANTA CLUBS, TO MIAMI BEACH IN A TENT. BUT TO HAVE BEEN HIS FRIEND, WAS MOST CERTAINLY AN INVALUABLE PRESENT.

AS WE ALL STAND HERE WITH SORROW THAT TEARS US APART KNOW HE GAVE EACH AND EVERYONE OF US, UNSELFISHLY FROM HIS HEART. REMEMBER ALL THE GOOD TIMES, ALWAYS HAPPY, WHETHER HEAVY OR ON A DIET TO GET TRIM. ALWAYS WITH A HUGE SMILE, HANDS CLAPPING IN THE AIR, THAT IS HOW HE WOULD WANT US TO REMEMBER HIM.

HE LIVED HIS LIFE TO THE FULLESS, WITHOUT SADDNESS OR REGRET I AM SURE HE WOULD WANT US TO CELEBRATE HIS LIFE AND NOT BE TOO UPSET. WRITING THESE WORDS, IS MY WAY TO EASE THE PAIN, AND MEND. I AM DEEPLY AND HUMBLY HONORED, THAT HE CALLED ME HIS FRIEND.

FAREWELL BUC, I LOVE YOU, AND WILL MISS YOU. THERE ARE NOT MANY, BUT JUST A FEW THAT HAVE THE CHARM AND MAGNATISM THAT YOU HAD WITH THAT SMILE. EVEN FEWIER THAT NOW HAVE, OR WILL EVER HAVE YOUR BRILLIANT STYLE !

I MISS YOU SWEET PIPED PIPER OF MY TIME, THANK YOU ALL THE BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES, AND FOR ALLOWING ME TO BE A PART OF YOUR SHORT LIVED LIFE.

IN MEMORY, APPRECIATION, AND MOST OF ALL LOVE.

So many strong & fond memories, and always.... it was due to BUC's tremendous magnetic appeal, spirit, and diversity in his music. Memories: from the first time he played at Eileen Rappoport's birthday party at the L& F in DC, to that FABULOUS BUC Party at ZEI during Quilt Weekend, to seeing BUC smile & dance while he played his own unbelievable brew of funky, jazzy, soul/House music. And ...there was always that signature BUC moment with the jazzy, funky piano solo that was too smoky & sophisticated to even describe, BUC made you FEEL it! It was always his impeccable taste for fine "soul" music, , and he touched your body & spirit so easily! Yes, BUC, thank you....your Spirit was your Gift to Us! Jack Gerard
